Renovation – Near Completion

It finally feels like we’re almost there. The big items pending are cabinets and radiators… but we’re almost there. We might even be in this year!

Drywall and paint complete

We’re almost there. The drywall and paint are complete, and now it’s mostly finish work. It’s looking awesome.

Stairs, skylights, insulation

We’re just about ready for drywall. The skylights are in and the most stunning part, the stairs and the bridge, are in place. The windows are in, and the back is completely changed!

This probably was the most dramatic of the changes. Now you can really see what the whole project is all about.

Construction begins

We have been reviewing progress about weekly. Things are moving along very much on schedule, without much yet in the way of delays, surprises or change orders. We aren’t expecting that this will always be the case, though we’ll be very happy if it is so.

We’ve posted a number of photo updates with comments and notes.

Demolition begins

There was a minor amount of soft-stripping done last week, but today, the demolition began in earnest.

Before the renovation

These pictures were taken as we were taking the last things out of the house, a day before the soft stripping was to begin.

We will never see the house looking like this again.

Reuse and Recycle

The architectural recycler makes sure that the two first Rs of the green person’s mantra are cared for in construction. There are numerous profit and non-profit ventures that specialize in reclaiming fixtures and materials from construction sites, which they in turn sell at a discount or use for housing rehabilitation or to fund other projects. Waste control

This kind of renovation involves a basic conundrum: how can you argue that you’re being green when you’re taking good materials and basically saying “I don’t like how they look”, and possibly dumping them in a landfill?
